    Ingredient Notes

These notes are here to help make this recipe a success; they cover some but not all ingredients; for a complete ingredient list, check out the recipe card below.

Salmon: I buy skin off salmon fillets from the fishmonger/grocery store. The recipe calls for 1lb/460g of salmon. You can use 4 thin pieces or 2 fat pieces. The recipe has cooking times for both.
Mayonnaise: I like to use kewpie mayo for this recipe, but use your favorite brand. Please don't use a low-fat or fat-reduced alternative, as they don't cook well.
Wasabi: The Japanese green horseradish that comes with sushi. You can get it preprepared in tubes in most grocery stores these days.
Furikake: The star of the show. Furikake is a Japanese rice seasoning that consists of a mixture of dried fish, sesame seeds, chopped seaweed, sugar, and salt. It is delicious!

    How do you say Furikake?

    It is pronounced: Fur-ri-kar-kay.

    Recipe Tips

We've tested this recipe at least 3 times to ensure it works well for you, have a look at our tips for getting the best dish you can!

    • Switch on your oven or air fryer as the first step; letting it heat up is the longest step!
    • While the oven is heating up, take the salmon from the refrigerator and let it come to room temperature.
    • Line your baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
    • Use a fork or mini whisk to mix the wet toppings; they'll combine much quicker.

Why You'll Love This Furikake Salmon

    • It is so quick to make and cook. Dinner can be ready in under 20 minutes!
    • The salmon stays so moist and tender.
    • The ingredients can all be found in your grocery store.
    • It bakes in the oven and is easy to clean up.
    • You can use leftovers as a quick lunch idea.

    Recipe Adaptions/Substitutions

These are all just suggestions and things that have worked in our test kitchen, but it is your dinner, so adapt it to suit your family. That is the beauty of cooking; we can all create our own delicious meals.

    • You can replace the salmon with trout, rock cod, rankin cod, mahi mahi, halibut, Arctic char, hapuka/groper, or sea bass.
    • For a Gluten-free version, swap the soy sauce for tamari.
    • You can replace the wasabi with Sriracha or Gochujang.
    • The topping also works surprisingly well with a thin chicken fillet.

    Serving Suggestions

Sides: We love this with some white rice and steamed Asian greens drizzled with sesame oil.
Wine: The dish is perfect for serving with Californian or Australian sparkling wine. It can also balance a dry Riesling or a more fruity Albariño. For red lovers, a Pinot Noir or Beaujolais would be perfect.
