This Hot Buttered Bourbon is the ultimate warm winter drink. You could serve this as a Christmas cocktail, or over New Year to welcome guest in from the cold. It is so easy to make, with the rich taste of brown sugar. Serve it with or without whipped cream.

    What is Hot Buttered Bourbon?

Traditionally people drank hot buttered rum, which was a spiced butter batter, mixed with hot water and a shot of rum. It is warming and delicious and I do love it.

BUT I'm not going to lie: This isn't your traditional hot buttered drink. They are watered down with equal amounts of hot water..... Nice but I really wanted to replicate the glaze on my bourbon glazed carrots and pumpkin. Because I can tell you whenever I make those I just want to drink the glaze.

So I have adapted the traditional hot buttered drinks and made my own version. My own much stronger and much richer version. If you are on a diet well look away!!! This is all going to get very un-diet-ee very quickly!!!

Because we start with a stick of butter! We add plenty of brown sugar. A hint of spice, a healthy amount of bourbon and enough hot water to bring everything together.

Then we drink it and start singing Christmas songs....well actually I was singing Christmas songs whilst I made it....Deck the halls just has to be sing when you are making Christmas Cocktails, and when you are taking photos of Christmas Cocktails and when you are drinking Christmas Cocktails, and when you are washing up the glasses from the Christmas Cocktails and once more whilst you write your post for said Christmas Cocktail.

Is Buttered Bourbon easy to make?

Yes! So simple to make!!! You heat the butter up with the sugar and the spices, turn the heat off and add the bourbon (I tell myself that adding it to the pan means at least some of the alcohol burns off)*

Then add a little splash of hot water. Just enough so you aren't drinking neat butter and bourbon....which I actually would do. But apparently that is frowned upon. So I add a little water, but not much, and not as much as some people think I should but quite frankly I am not sure if I need that negativity in my life!

So if you want to drink this without the water, go for it and also, can we be BFF's?

*Disclaimer: It doesn't! So please don't drive or operate heavy machinery or have a conversation with the school principal after you have drunk these.

Should I put whipped cream on the top?

That is completely up to you, personally I think everything is made better with a little whipped cream! When I made this to photograph I was making my Roasted Cauliflower with Creamy Garlic Pasta for dinner and wanted to make sure I had enough cream left for that. So we drank it without cream.......but I think a good dollop would be a great idea.

p.s if you have any leftovers they will keep in the fridge and can then be warmed in the microwave. Plus try this poured over vanilla ice cream. It is amazing!!!!!

I think it was a bit too strong for me. Also it was weirdly salty tasting? I even added extra water, an ice cube and whipped cream after. Maybe it just wasn't for me though. 🤷

        You sure can!
I have made it up to a day in advance and kept in the refrigerator. Then just heated it up gently when I wanted it 🙂
